Today, most people use digital devices with screens daily. However, improper use of these devices may cause a condition known as digital eye strain.
Digital eye strain occurs most often in people who spend long periods in front of digital displays. Exposure to high-energy visible light (or HEV) can also be a factor. Symptoms of digital eye strain include:
An estimated 65% of Canadians experience some degree of digital eye strain.
High-energy visible light (HEV) exists in the 380nm to 500nm range of the light spectrum. It is close to ultraviolet (UV) light, which ranges from 100nm to 380nm. UV light tans skin and is linked to the development of several eye diseases.
The muscles that focus your eyes also work harder when you focus on nearby objects. These muscles are not meant to work for extended periods and can become fatigued when we overuse them.
Following the 20-20-20 rule when using a digital device can greatly reduce the symptoms of digital eye strain. The rule is simple: look at something at least 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds every 20 minutes. This can “reset” the muscles that focus your eyes and help offset the effects of digital eye strain.
Software that filters blue light from the display is also available for many devices. We recommend installing this software on your phones and computers.
Another great way to help manage the symptoms of digital eye strain is to use a separate set of computer glasses whenever you are working on a digital device for an extended period. We can also offer you a set of anti-fatigue lenses matched to your prescription to help curb the effects of eye strain.
While computer glasses might be best for computer work specifically, anti-fatigue lenses can help correct your vision at a variety of distances, providing you with clear vision all day long.
Both of these options are available for patients, and an eye exam will help our team determine which option is right for you.
We can help relieve digital eye strain symptoms. Request an appointment to schedule an exam at your convenience.
You can find us in the River East Plaza, between Safeway and Booster Juice, and across from Tim Hortons. We have plenty of parking available on-site.

“Just had the first eye exam for my daughter with Dr. Chow. My daughter really does not like doctors… but Dr. Chow was perfect she did the exam flawlessly and handled my daughter’s objections really well. ZERO stress. Now my daughter is excited to come back for her next eye exam in a year. Thank you also to Dr. Mestito-Dao super nice and super accommodating! Not to mention the staff, pro’s at what they do. Thank you and nicely done HVC!”
“I had a very good experience with this clinic. The reception staff were warm, and efficient. My insurance coverage was handling very well. The pre-exam procedures were done well, by staff that were well versed in doing them. The Optometrist (Dr Zimmer), was excellent to deal with and very thorough. The office had a pleasant ambiance, and I left my appointment with a very “good feeling” about the whole experience. I will be booking my appointments with this clinic again.”
“Every time I go to the H.V.C. I’m very pleased with Dr. Mundle & his staff’s thorough eye examination. They always take their time to explain & answer any questions I have regarding their tests & procedures.”
“Everyone was very friendly. They went over and above to explain everything to me. Helped me pick out new glasses which I’m obsessed with. When I went back in to pick them up the girl was so excited to help me and I left feeling so confident.”
“The staff are so friendly and it’s a very welcoming place. I see Dr. Mestito-Dao and I always feel like she listens to me and offers great feedback & advice. The exams are thorough so I also feel reassured that I’m in good hands and have had a comprehensive appointment. I would recommend Henderson Vision Centre to anyone.”

Contacts are one of the most popular forms of vision correction. Because of their flexible, comfortable, and hands-free fit, many individuals prefer wearing soft contacts over eyeglasses.
Their design offers several benefits that eyeglasses don’t, such as a more natural field of vision that remains unobstructed from eyeglass frames. However, contacts do require more maintenance and care.
Yes, contact lenses do expire about every four years from their manufactured date. The contact lens solution that it’s packaged in will no longer be sterile and you should not put expired lenses in your eyes.
Unlike a prescription for eyeglasses, contact lens prescriptions also expire annually, necessitating an updated contact lens exam and fitting to place an order for a new supply.
